• Believed the U.S. was one nation, not a collection of states.
• On January 1,1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation
• He wrote the Gettysburg Address, a speech that said the Civil War

was fought to preserve a government "of the people,by the people,
and for the people."

He was born on February 12, 1809 and died on April 15, 1865.
